About the Role

This position is an Airplane Flight Instructor (Lead Plane Pilot), GS-2181-13 working for the US Wildland Fire Service Location negotiable: You must be physically located within 50 miles of a DOI facility. One or more positions may be filled from applications received under this announcement in the advertised office.

What You'll Do

  • As a Airplane Flight Instructor (Lead Plane Pilot), your duties will include but are not limited to the following: Serves as a national level technical advisor, course coordinator, and instructor for aviation and fire suppression operations and as an Instructor Pilot and Pilot-In-Command (PIC) conducting general and special use operations.
  • Operations are conducted under visual and instrument flight rules, including tactical missions over wildland fires, smokejumper operations, reconnaissance, and transportation of personnel and cargo.
  • During the fire season the individual functions as an Air Tactical Pilot and team member of an Aerial Supervision Module, providing airspace coordination and direct supervision of aircraft assigned to wildland fire incidents.

Requirements

  • Citizen or National.
  • Suitability for Federal employment, as determined by background investigation.

  • Individuals assigned male at birth after 12-31-59 must be registered for the Selective Service.

  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 21 nights per month.
  • You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Subject to frequent extended travel 21 nights per month particularly during fire season, and you must obtain a government charge card for travel.
  • This is a Drug Testing Designated Position.
  • You will be required to submit to screening for illegal drug use and pass prior to appointment.
  • This position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
