About the Role

Serves as Fire Protection Engineer (FPE) in the KSC Protective Services Office. The FPE assists the Authority Having Jurisdiction in the management of KSC's Fire Protection Program, playing a vital role in protection of people, assets, and property of NASA, contractors, and Commercial partners. Ensures the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association, Florida Fire Prevention Code, and/or the NASA Safety Standard for Fire Protection (NASA -STD-8719.11) are met.

What You'll Do

  • Approves equivalent or superior quality, strength, fire resistance, effectiveness, durability, and safety over those prescribed by the fire codes.
  • Approves the work of NASA, Contractor, and Commercial partners' engineers, fire department, and specialists in the planning, directing, and coordination of activities for the organization's Fire Protection Program.
  • Makes decisions and recommendations regarding flight systems, fire/rescue, fire prevention, fire protection engineering.
  • Decisions are accepted as authoritative and are only reviewed for compatibility with program objectives and resource impact.
  • Performs Fire Protection planning, coordinating, validating, defining goals/objectives, and surveillance of implementation.
  • Provides, performs, or evaluates fire protection engineering studies to assure adequate safety of personnel, facilities, ground support equipment, and space vehicles.
  • Responsible for ensuring, by reviewing and approving, building construction and fire protection features are in place to minimize danger to life from the effects of fire.

Requirements

  • Basic Requirement: You must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major in engineering.
  • OR Have a combination of education and experience: college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.
  • The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following: Professional registration or licensure -- Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.
  • Absent other means of qualifying under this standard, those individuals who achieved such registration by means other than written test (e.g., State grandfather or eminence provisions) are eligible only for positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration.
  • For example, an individual who attains registration through a State Board's eminence provision as a manufacturing engineer typically would be rated eligible only for manufacturing engineering positions.
  • Written Test -- Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional.
  • Specified academic courses -- Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and that included the courses specified in the basic requirements.
  • Ordinarily there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience.
  • (The above examples of related curricula are not all inclusive.) U.S. degrees must have been awarded from colleges or universities that are accredited by recognized accrediting organizations.
