This position is within the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB), Office of the Technical Director. As an independent agency in the Executive Branch, the DNFSB oversees nuclear safety across the Department of Energy's (DOE) nuclear weapons complex.
What You'll Do
- →Manages a group of up to15 OTD general engineers, cognizant engineers, and/or resident inspectors ranging between DN I and DN V.
- →Plans, directs, and manages the efforts of a group of professional engineers responsible for reviewing and evaluating the technical adequacy of complex processes and safety related systems associated with DOE directives and safety management programs.
- →Provides oversight of their group's progress toward meeting project objectives and assesses project effectiveness and productivity, as related to overall Board mission and goals; identifies barriers and determines solutions to ensure the Board's strategic objectives related to the safety of DOE's defense nuclear activities are achieved.
- →Interacts with DOE officials and contractors, scientific groups, and committees, other Federal agencies, special interest groups, members of Congress and congressional staff, and state and local governments to assist the Deputy Technical Director and Technical Director in assessing DOE defense nuclear activities and facilities and in developing Board recommendations to the Secretary of Energy.
- →Identifies and proposes DOE facilities, activities, and programs for DNFSB review that would be of major importance to the Board and the nation and have the potential for significantly affecting public health and safety because of operations in support of DOE's nuclear weapons complex.
- →Reviews DOE's implementation plans for compliance with Board recommendations related to the safety of defense nuclear activities and facilities.
- →Evaluates performance and recommends assignments, awards, and training.
- →Counsels employees on work-related issues, complaints, and the need for training.
- →Develops performance plans, assigns performance ratings, and writes performance evaluation narratives as the rating official for their group.
Requirements
- ✓US Citizenship is required.
- ✓Suitable for Federal employment, determined by background investigation.
- ✓Must pass a drug screening.
- ✓Direct Deposit of pay is required.
- ✓Selective Service registration required for male applicants, unless exempt.
- ✓The organization is structured into five (5) distinct functional groups: Nuclear Weapons Program (NWP) Evaluates the safety of ongoing nuclear operations, including nuclear explosive operations, performed at DOE National Nuclear Security Administration facilities.
- ✓Nuclear Materials Processing and Stabilization (NMPS) Evaluate the safety of ongoing nuclear materials processing and stabilization operations in the DOE complex.
- ✓Many of these activities are associated with the processing of legacy waste form past nuclear weapons production.
- ✓Nuclear Programs and Analysis (NPA) Provides subject matter expertise support to NMPS and NWP, commonly pertaining to DOE safety management programs.
- ✓Additionally, coordinates the review of the DOE directives programs, which includes the periodic updates to DOE Orders, Instructions, Manuals, and Technical Standards.
- ✓Nuclear Facility Infrastructure and Projects (NFIP) Reviews and evaluates infrastructure and projects within DOE, including the design of new defense nuclear facilities and major modifications of existing defense nuclear facilities.
- ✓Field Operations (FO) Manages the Resident Inspector program which involves providing field oversight of five major DOE sites, in order to provide the Board and OTD management with near-real time information about general operations and potential safety issues at DOE sites.
